Doi alleged that Union Pacific was negligent in numerous ways, including the failure to supervise and train its employees correctly. He also argued that the railroad did not ensure proper safety practices and failed to adhere to industry standards. He was awarded $557 million by the jury.

A portion of the $557 million award will also be used for his future medical expenses. The court will also issue an order requiring railroad officials to ensure that the members of the gang's zone are properly educated and have the safety equipment and procedures required to operate their vehicles.
